Bummy was the first of the 3RD flock to be hatched in an incubator. For two weeks it was fun to see who was chirping in the incubator each day. No two chicks were the same. Seventeen of twenty-four eggs hatched.
Bummy was born with huge feet and crooked toes. She wore a shoe made out of tape which straightened out her toes. The second after we were done wrapping her toes with the tape, she took off running.
Bummy likes to look at herself in the mirror and is by far one of the sweetest and affectionate hens on the planet.
Flower is a sweet hen with a crazy hairdo.
Sometimes she will lay her egg while she is sitting in my lap.
Ivy is unique in looks and her manners are very delicate.
Pinky Floyd is extra sweet and looks as if she might be smiling.
Scarlet is our most beautiful hen and she always has her best friend Flower close by her side.
Late one night we could hear a crackling noise coming from Vermillion while she slept. The crackling sounded like something crawling around in her stomach. Later we learned it was probably Pneumonia and that she was doomed. Not giving up, we held a bottle of Iodine under her nose until she jerked her head away. After doing this twice a day for three days, the crackling sound was gone and Vermillion lived for four more years.
Sometimes she is known as "Parts Vermillion".
A very sad day to find a hawk tore Steely Dan into pieces.
Steely Dan had bright blue legs and was a favorite.
We chased after and stopped the hawk from tearing Ivanhoe apart, but we were too late as the hawk was successful in breaking his neck.
We are forever sad. We will never know what he would have looked like grown up. He had beautiful colorful feathers like a flower.
If it is not possible to hang fishing line over our heads, the chickens are vulnerable to the hawks. Lesson learned: A big farm is not a better farm.
Salvatore has an extra toe on each foot.
Salvatore does not mind having a bath. He does not suddenly try to jump up and out of the water, he will stay put and allow us to wash him squeaky clean.
All the hens seem to like Salvatore the most.
Vesuvius has orange legs with green toenails and the black feathers on his chest make him look like he could be wearing a shop apron.
Vesuvius loves to cuddle and rest with his necked strectched long and his head down flat.
